Abbott is where Willie Nelson was born in 1933, raised by his grandparents on Mesquite Street during the Great Depression, and never truly left. Population peaked at 713 in 1914. The road into town is named Willie Nelson Road. He bought the church. He saved the courthouse. He owns the grocery store and directs every nickel toward scholarships for Abbott students. This is the town that made America’s troubadour and he’s never stopped paying it back.
